Directions to Hermosa
From Winston, NM
From Winston, NM it takes 1-1.5 hrs to drive the 23 miles to Hermosa, depending on your speed. There are a few places where google maps tries to take you on roads that might not exist or have been re-routed. This link https://goo.gl/maps/MPPE162o2xuc4zzz6 has been adjusted to be a more accurate route to Hermosa.
A high-clearance 4WD vehicle is best, however, AWD/2WD vehicles can usually make the drive if they have better clearance than the average sedan. The road is rocky, so ensure you have the equipment and knowledge to change a tire just in case.
From the Winston General Store continue west on Hwy 52 for about 500 ft, turn left onto Republic Rd.
Continue straight on that paved road through Winston ~1 mile. Just up the hill after you pass the “Cross Bow Coffee” roadside stand on your right, you will turn left onto St. Cloud Rd. This road is paved for a short stretch of downhill, but is mostly a well-maintained first road going back to the St. Cloud Mine. There are often 18-wheeler trucks driving in and out to the mine.
Continue straight on the St. Cloud Mine road for ~5 miles. After a large right curve in the road you will be approaching the mine. Turn LEFT onto FS road 157 or County Rd. 03. You will pass a mining road entrance immediately on your left and go over a cattle guard. This is where the dirt road becomes less maintained. There are signs that say "NO SEMI TRUCKS" and "NO OUTLET". The road ends just past Hermosa.
Continue on this road ~16 miles until you arrive at Hermosa. Google Maps makes it look like there are more turns, but once you get on this road you just don't turn off it. There aren't any real roads along the way to accidentally turn onto, just continue the obvious most traveled path. Close to Hermosa you will see a left turn with a road sign (S Fork Rd.), but DON'T TURN LEFT there. Continue straight past the small cemetery on the left, and you should be able to see the barn and soon the buildings at Hermosa. Follow the road straight up towards the barn.
Turn left onto the Hermosa property, you'll pass the barn on the right, a small house on the left. You can pull up to the main Hermosa buildings along “Main Street” for temporary parking and unloading.
